  • Response Part 2:

The piece starts out with two performers, then quickly becomes four. Three bass instruments, hosho, and lead marimba come in at approximately 1:27.

This version of Dangu Rangu is based on a recorded performance of Bandambira. There is a fair amount of improv that happens amongst the players here, as well as specific variations and sections.

If there are specific questions anyone has about this piece, my Yahoo email is Nyamuziwa.

    Thanks for listening.

    Stephen

  • Thanks Stephen, My apologies, I will change it to 9 performers, the 4 playes was a guess based on my apparently not very good ear for marimba.

To other subscribers, Well, you heard the man.

    More mbira coming soon.

  • Beautiful piece. Two questions: Who is playing? It's always nice to give credit where credit is due! Secondly, where did your information about Dangurangu come from? I have not heard this history before.

  • I have no idea who is playing, its something i stumbled across and had a copy on my computer, The info is from years ago from a mhepo called nyamapfeni who is sikarudzi for the tsoko family tree, this was also verified at a completly different bira by another gombwe called dzivaguru

  • Dangurangu can be played with 13 unique parts, Its 13 peices make the complete track, The reason why it has 13 pieces is because, Dangurangu was a song of breaking apart and rebuilding an entire family tree from a spiritual level. The One and first tribe of Zimbabwe, split into 13 different houses and Sub-Totems, so that people who were related before, were no longer of any spiritual relation, Hence the 13 unique parts of the track dangurangu

  • Of the 13 new totems, a gwenyambira from each Totem would master and teach down just that one part of the track which represented their specific totem. The 13 parts were dispersed as the people went in their diff directions. This meant that years to generations on, if you wanted to summon the eldest spirits, it would have to be done by people from all totems coming together as no one family knew all parts to dangurangu, but rather would have to seek each other out and united play it complete.

  • Hi, this is my group Nyamuziwa Marimba from Seattle. I'm not sure who posted this or why they thought there were only four players... Perhaps they didn't listen to the entire piece?

This was recorded at the Zimbabwe Music Festival in Olympia WA in August 2007. There are 9 performers in the group which includes hosho. You can obtain a better quality mp3 plus other video and audio downloads from our MySpace page. Just do a search for NyamuziwaMarimba.
