There are much cheaper folding bikes but they only fold in two places. The Brompton folds in three places and goes a lot smaller. I know a blue-water yachtsman who wants a folding bike but he hasn't got much room on his 21 foot long pocket cruiser (its done 7000nm since leaving England!) None of the folders ride as nicely as a full size road-racer but they definitely beat walking! Pity that the Brompton is so expensive.

The Brompton would certainly be the best bike for daily commuting, especially short distances. You can go off road, but not real trails - just gravel or dirt paths.
