A dorian second mode of G major scale. used in funk and santana and jazz.
It's all the same notes as the G major scale but with the second degree as the tonal center or root.
typical dorian type progression has its I chord as a minor chord and it's IV as a dominant 7 chord (such as Amin7 to D7 or D9) It's also all the same notes a D mixolydian, so this new shape could be a new position of the mixolydian from my other video. obviously there's a lot of theory behind it, so when all else fails, just plug it in and try it out.

  • Good stuff again ! I learned the seven positions starting from the G-major as position 1. A dorian as position 2 etc. What seems confusing is what chords go with what scale. In pentatonics its the key your in, that easy and makes sense. In modes ?

  • there different ways to get to your answer. 1. if it's a minor progression plug in the minor pent. and than add the half steps from aeolian or dorian and the one that sounds the best is probably the right one. a progession that starts with a major chord plug in major pent. and add half steps for ionian or mixo or lydian and whichever sounds the best will probably be the right one. most minor progressions are either aelian or dorian and most major are either ionia(major scale) or mixo.

  • D dorian is all the same as C major, Bb major is the same as C dorian. there are a lot of cool modal approaches to blues. A blues you could play A mixo over A7, Dmixo over D7 and

E mixo over E7. a different way to think of the same thing would be A mixo over A7 than A dorian over D7 (which is the same as D mixo) than the A major scale over E7 ( same notes as E mixo) it's all about the easiest way for YOU to start plugging in the right scale. this is good for practice but eventually it will flow

  • That's exactly what i wanted to do: "modal pentatonics". Blues with some extra color. But does dorian has to stick with 2 chord progressiions? ii IV7?

  • no not at all, good question. that's just one example. it would break down like this: a dorian would be some or any combination derived from G major but with Amin as the tonal center. so the chords of A dorian and G major are exactly the same except for what the root is. the chords are this: Gmajor,Amin,Bmin,Cmajor,D7, Eminor, F#min7b5,these chords in any combination with Amin as the tonal center would be A dorian. feel free to ask any other questions, thanks.

  • So that works with every key. In C, dorian would be the same as Bb. You look at a key and play it's dorian right? So just to make sure: Looking at a A blues we play G Dorian, and a Am blues we do the same?

  • the idea is to practice all the stuff so eventually you are insintually just playing whatever you're hearing in your head, I don't think about modes when I'm improvising. they should be tools to help you develop your vocabulary. thanks
