That would be a great world if it worked like that, but the truth is that the religious conservative base has taken too much power over the party and its ideology. No longer can a republican win without them. We've taught them that it's okay for them to want to make bullshit decisions like stopping stem cell or trying to amend the constitution to stop gays from marrying. If we went back to the days of Goldwater Republicans, we'd probably be able to have the elections you speak of.
