PARKSVILLE - His coaching of the game continues, now passing on his knowledge to his grand kids.
Howie Meeker has been a player, coach, and broadcaster. He's won the Stanley Cup, has a place in the hockey hall of fame, and today joins a class of 54 appointed to the order of Canada.
Meeker has known about the honor since November, but had to keep it a secret even from family and friends. A prestigious award sitting at the top of a life full of accomplishments.
Meeker is finding that as time passes and life moves on, emotions play more of a factor. Making his latest honor extra special.
Meeker won the national hockey league's rookie of the year honor during the 1946 - 47 season. Retired twenty two years later at the age of 44, with one playing highlight standing out high above the rest
A date hasn't been set when meeker will receive his latest award. But he did confirm he will be smiling ear to ear when he arrives in Ottawa sometime in 2011.
