@Tracymmo If I remember correctly, it was at these games or its/their summer counterparts in Barcelona, Spain a few months later about the controversy with Estonia's flag. Estonia just won a gold medal in one event but the flag was mistakenly raised upside down at the medal ceremony. The reason was that the flag had never seen before or something like that.

@MindorffJodl And to further clarify: at this point Russia and other former Soviet republics (except the Baltic states) were at the Olympics as the Unified Team since their national Olympic committees hadn't affiliated yet with the IOC. Basically things were still in transition from the USSR to the independent countries we know today, and so the sports teams were in a sort of limbo as bureaucracy caught up with the changes.

@gvsku Many of us in other countries felt bad for your athletes not getting to see their own flag and hear their own anthem. It must have been so strange for all of you watching at home too. It was even a little strange for me in the States not seeing the old USSR flag. I'm glad the performances were so great though.

I still remember that rather humiliating "people-from-nowhere" feeling of seeing your country's athletes on the podium - yet having to listen to some totally alien piece of music and watch that absurd(when used instead of the national banner, no offence to the IOC:-)) cloth..
why are there no country flags for 1st and 2nd place?

The Unified Team used the Olympic flag. The Unified Team at the 1992 Olympics, was a joint team consisting of twelve of the fifteen former Soviet republics.
