Florence Atieno Ochieng is a 31-year-old mother of four children who also takes care of three orphans, left to her by her brother. She is married to a "casual worker" -- something similar to a day-laborer in the US. She runs a small hotel (restaurant) where she serves chapati, beans, rice, ugali (sort of like a thick cream of wheat, served with meat or fish), fish, meat and vegetables. She is asking for 10,000 KSH to expand her food stock.P
Florence recently joined the K-MET volunteer Community Health Worker (CHW) group in Kisumu, Kenya. As a CHW she will be trained by K-MET and will begin visiting members of her community who are sick with a variety of illnesses. Her work will include distributing Nutriflour (a vitamin-enriched flour produced by K-MET) to malnourished patients, providing reproductive health education, referring patients to local clinics and hospitals, and providing basic health care.
