In many parts of Asia you'll have the opportunity to buy cheap counterfeit goods ranging from CDs/DVDs to clothing and perfume. The backpack industry is particularly filled with copies since major bag companies assemble their products in Asia anyway.

In this two part series I review the "Deuter" Cerrotorre 40 (That's just the name. It's not a 40 liter bag, probably 28 liters). After having returned this bag twice due to defects in construction, I really wanted to hate this bag. Yes, the materials are not quite up to the Deuter standard. Yes, the feel of the bag (from zipping the zippers to fastening the clasps) is not as smooth/crisp as the genuine article.

BUT

You have to give credit where credit is due. This particular specimen has proven to be both reliable and durable. When compared to the closest Deuter model (the Futura 28), you'll see that the Cerrotorre 40 has all the standard features:

- main compartment that can be separated by zipper with separate lower compartment access
- secondary pocket
- integrated rain cover
- air-comfort system

AND has a few features the legit model doesn't:

- extra lower pocket
- two valuables pockets on the waist belt
- sturdy rubber haul handle

After using this pack for the second half of my trip and as my airplane carry-on, I've grown to like this bag as a good-value piece of gear that I'll hold on to.

If you decide to buy a fake bag make sure that:
1. It has features (pockets/rain cover/etc) that you can't get in the real deal (otherwise just spend the extra cash and get a legit bag).
2. Take the time to TEST THE BAG YOU'RE GOING TO BUY. Make sure that the zippers, clasps, materials and straps are all sound and strong before handing over your hard-earned cash.
3. Bargain. Hard. Don't be afraid to get the lowest price possible and if you can't get it, be willing to move on to another vendor. The good thing about fake goods is that there are always other people selling them.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

  • So just don't buy shit from china.

  • you can easily recognize the fake ones from the original because obviously its very cheap, and the kind of materials they use.

    ....always questionable!!

sadly people who buy those fake items does'nt realize in the long run they lose more co'z most of the time they broke easily..

thats why if you have enough money its better to buy originals, it last longer, looks better and reliable.

    thats all..

  • Not easy to find the original here in Asia, it cost a bomb if any.

  • Good Review. I bought the exact same bag in Cambodia but it was labeled North Face and I got it for only $10 USD

  • Wow.. great video I have learned a-lot.
