Actually, in one episode, Mr. Burns is given a letter that says he lives in New Jersey. And since he lives in the Same Springfield as the Simpsons, they probably live in New Jersey

In the episode where bart and lisa are in the 3rd grade and go on a field trip to Capital City, the mascot for the baseball team states that Springfield is a northern state.

I always thought it was IL too, but I'm tending to believe it's Springfield, MA because one of the artists who draws for the Simpson's is from MA. I'm going with Springfield, MA.

Comes down to this. All 35 Springfield's in America were trying to get attention on the release of the Simpsons movie upon release in theaters back in 2007 to get exposure and to make a name for their town and get a mark on the map. Publicity stunt, that is all.
