Radio 1 used to go off air between 2am and 5am, and when they came back on air at 5am they used to play 5 minutes of jingles. Sadly, I got up early one morning to record them.

  • Wow!! I have the same recording!! Yip, I was a very early bird in 1989 too.

The only problem was, FM for radio 1 was in its infancy, so the sound quality was very poor.

Fair play to Chris Moyles.... he recycles some of those jingles on the Golden Hour on a Friday.

    Brilliant times though.

  • @mickydireland You're right. FM was only switched on for Radio 1 in my part of the world in December 1989. I think this recording must've therefore been the very next day (very sad, I know), because Radio 1 changed all their jingles and image to "1FM" early in 1990.

  • I used to get up early myself to record those Radio 1 jingles, but now sadly lost the recording.

  • Glad I wasn't the only one!!

  • 1989 Radio 1 had the Best Line up Johnny Beerling Controller The Jingles of 20 Years ago were fantastic

  • Absolutely! 1989 was a good year for Radio 1, as they switched on half the country to FM.

  • moyles is rubbish

dlt hamilton edmunds and co were real stars

  • did you use to record the top 40 on a sunday too lol

  • Spec-effing-tacular

  • I like the shalamar dead giveaway soundalike bed after the Jakki Brambles jingle!

  • Wish the BBC would release these as a CD for people to buy, they'd make a fortune

  • @katakisLives true.

  • The way jingles should sound!

  • @firefighterno1 I remember seeing the whole story of how Mattew Bannister wreaked Radio 1 on documentry "trouble at the top" it was very enlightening.

  • @PM1970 Bruno Brookes! Radio one legend!

  • @katakisLives It doesn't have the same "feel" as it used to! Some of the jingles may be cheesy, but it's classic cheese and I have so many memories of listening to R1 regularly, and Bruno Brookes doing the Top 40 was my favourite!! The younger generation have completely missed out!!
