  • It's to reduce the cutting pressure, this insures the cutting is done mainly with the left hand side of the cutting tool. If you leave it at 0 deg the cutting will be on both side of your cutting tool. That would maybe okay on a big lathe but with the small motor on these mini lathes it will soon run out of power.

P.S. 59 deg is for a metric form, use 54 deg for imperial

  • Yes that's a 20mm x 1500mm ballscrew i cut for my router.

  • notice much wear on those gears? How long have you been using this lathe? I have serious doubts about the nylon gears...

  • I only brought the lathe to help with building my CNC router project, I have since sold it. I only cut about 10 threads on the lathe, the nylon gears held up well, I used a light oil to keep them well lubricated. As I mentioned in the video it's a slow process taking many light cuts, but it gets the job done.

  • How come you set your compound slide to 59 degrees?

  • nylon gears hold up well even with no lube, I like the way and motor covers, I use cardboad on my smithy to help keep the chips out.

    Nice video :)

  • Is that a ballscrew you are cutting?
