Love him or hate him, Backlund was a legit wrestler that was put in place to protect the company's interests and keep the title from being stolen. You have to remember that back in those days, there were guys that wrestled in all the different promotions and so the NWA, AWA and the W.W.W.F. had to have a guy as champion that could put the hurt on an opponent if need be. Today, it's not about that. It is about promos and selling dolls, t-shirts and replica belts.

by fans i meant drawing power...i stand by my statement as i lived through both reigns and followed wrestling extremely close.....backlund was a huge draw his first two years....graham drew mainly because he made everyone he faced look like they could beat him and we wanted to see him get beat....the crowds went nuts for putski, mascaras, maivia, and of course sammartino, every time they went against graham.

It's not about who has more "fans". Backlund was a babyface so of course he had more fans. That's not important. What is important is who was a DRAW. And Graham owned Backlund in that respect.

revisionist history....backlund was extremely popular his first two years as champ....superstar had a few fans but he was nowhere near as popular as backlund when he first dropped the belt. backlund imploded after two years and became a joke ..

Big mistake giving the title to Backlund. Graham was the top draw in wrestling ,and would have become the top star that Hulk Hogan became if he was given the big push. The reflection of perfection,the number one selection,the greatest wrestler of all time, Superstar Billy Graham.
