I'm starting karate in the next couple weeks and really looking forward to it.
one of the things I like about it is that it seems to give you freedom, freedom from fear, knowing that you are capable of protecting yourself and others if need comes.

Nice match!

i hate kumite, its not real fighting, you have to score points??? what a load of shit!! when you enter any other compatition its a competly different style of fighting! kumite takes away combos, close quarter fighting which is what most fightin is(we all cant keep determined someone at a distance)and many other things! we need to get away from this kumite shit!!

EXACTLY Id always thought it would be perfect if my kid learned the arts in a Buddhist monastery. They are VERY level headed.I heard here how a mom thanks to her sons karate classes took him OFF Ritalin.Again i dont think any monk wants to go fight inUFC!

this classmate of mine.she is using all sorts of maritial arts and rough sports to turn her children into sociopathic pitbulls.until recently I learned this:sociopaths may all love ma and guns etc but that doesnt mean all martial artists are sociopaths.thank god!

thanks!right context indeed!long story short:thats exactly what i used to think of ma in the 70s Buddhism and all.what freaks me out about societal acceptance of violence recently like my old classmates like the glamorization of prizefifghts etc is equating cruelty ,violence with strength like (cont)
thanks!Im a sociology student.Ive noticed since the 70S ,it seems to me,our society is less empathic, violent.ex stuff like Ultimate Fighting seen as mainstream.some of my old friends reflected ths too.

What you see in kumite matches is the culmination of years of mental and physical training, which involves hours of self-discovery. One can rarely take that journey without embracing core values of peace and serenity. The MA evolved originally from monks and when applied in the right context could have only positive influence on our society.

did doing this seem unnatuural toyou?what drew you to karate?ever been knocked out? why no mats?

At first it was very unnatural. The hardest part was not getting emotional about being hit or, worse, hitting someone else. After a while, that response detaches. I love the mental and physical challenge of karate. It is always changing, so I never get bored. The friendships I have made are the best I've ever had. No mats because we are supposed to have good balance and not fall down, or if we do, fall properly! Kids under 18 are required to wear helmets.

is this boxing or karate? i saw no kicks. or was there just a rule?

This is shito ryu, traditional Okinawan, karate. There just happened not to be any kicks thrown during this fight, but kicks are an integral feature...a kick to the head area gets a triple score!
