GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- A UNC Greensboro professor was riding his bike home from work last Wednesday when he was hit by a car.

Dr. Mark Schulz said he was taking his usual two-mile bike commute down Aycock St. last Wednesday night. "The next thing I remember is being jostled around inside the EMT van ... some EMT guy saying 'it doesn't look like you'll be riding that bike again'," Schulz said.

Schulz, a Ph.D. who teaches epidemiology at UNCG, later discovered he was hit by a car. He suffered a concussion, a broken sternum, five broken ribs, five compressed vertebrae, and a broken left knee cap.

After he read the police accident report, Schulz said he got angry. That's when he discovered that the driver who hit him was texting on her cell phone at the time.

Schulz, who was already a bicycle activist, said he now wants to change North Carolina law to make it illegal to talk or text on a cell phone while driving. He has planned to talk to state legislator Pricey Harrison.

Harrison, an avid bicyclist, said she herself has had some close calls on the roads in Greensboro.

"You know we've had legislation for the past several sessions that would ban cell phone use -- both texting and talking -- while driving, and it just has no traction," said Harrison.

Harrison said Schulz's case has given her renewed hope to try again to implement legislation for the ban.
