This is the second of four presentations on Paul Cézanne. Cézanne, the great French post-impressionist painter, was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839. His marvelous use of design and color united in his paintings to help form a bridge between the impressionist painters and the new growing art form called cubism. Cézanne went to Paris in 1861 where he met Impressionist Camille Pissarro, and the two became friends. Cézanne's interest in simplifying forms to their natural essentials led to a number of fascinating studies -- landscapes, still lifes, and bathers. Here are several of his studies of people, building portraits from simple strokes of the brush. He died in 1906 after suffering diabetes for 16 years. Music is the traditional ballad "Scarborough Fair," played by guitarist Matteo Campanella.
