Here is a day trip in an urban/suburban environment. Kind of a test of a "Get Home Bag" scenario which might include some type of meal break. Temperature was 70 degrees and hike was 7 miles in about 3 hours including breaks. Pack weighed 21 1/4 pounds, including 5 pounds of water. I, of course, did not take any "sleeping gear". Basic rundown of kit is as follows. Pack=2.1# (30 liter capacity), Clothing= 3#(fleece jacket, rain jacket, extra socks, gloves) , Emergency Shelter = 1#, Cook Kit=1.25#, Lunch=.5#, Extra Food=.7#(Cliff Bars), Water=5#, Possibles=3.8#(GPS,xtra batteries, Camcorder, Small knife, Headlamp,Small AM/FM radio, small binos, small trowel), Emergency gear/trail gear=1.8#(1st aid, small fire kit,PSK, platypus, water purification tablets, candle,Cliff bar, hank of paracord), trekking pole and reading book = 2.3# (neither were used). Also did not use my rain jacket, Emergency Trail Gear, Shelter, extra food, small radio, small binos and came home with 1 pint of water.

  • Hey buddy, try Medaglia D'Oro instant espresso coffee. I'm sure you've seen it at your local market. It is supposedly espresso but brews like regular coffee. I used to like Via but the Medaglia is much cheaper and tastes incredible. They offer it in a small jar for around $4 or a large steel can for about $6.50

  • @ihoppy , Thanks I'll try it.

  • Yes, salt does make you thirsty, but I was drinking that much "before lunch". I filled my 1 pint flask 3 times, plus used 1 1/2 pints for lunch. Starbucks does taste good. I drink the "automatic drip" grind every day.

  • Starbucks is great, the best instant coffee by far, and at 5 for 3 bucks I can't see it as expensive. Other coffee is cheaper for a reason, but 60 cents is not expensive.

  • Starbucks Via - yes! Italian Roast, best instant IMHO - one of the 10 essentials - LOL! Good job!

  • nice day.

  • What a great "experiment" mrsdjsdj. This definitely gives you a good idea of your system in use. Good to note that the weather was perfect & that you were thinking about other scenarios. Great video idea & thanks for sharing!

  • @mrmonkeyman50 Hey mrmonkeyman, no the starbucks via isn't that expensive at amazon it comes out at .75 a cup. I think when compared to the tasters choice it seems pricey because the tasters choice is very cheap. take care

  • @ez2curanut 1000mg of sodium that is.

  • good video. between the ramen and tuna it's closer to 1000mg. (2 servings per container). I love tuna and have switched to the starkist very low sodium( 30mg/serving) , and quick cook penne rigate 3 minutes by American Beauty pasta. the 5oz white albacore tuna can has a quick pull tab for easy opening. I liked this video testing and sharing with us. Thanks. Jim
