The Nice Jewish Time Traveler, a young Jew interested in his heritage, takes his time machine to the year 2525 to find out how the holiday of Tu BiShvat is celebrated in the future. While there, he finds that the future is not a bright one, or a green one, when an old man tells him that all of the trees on the planet have been cut down, global warming has caused catastrophic harm, and that there are no fruits left on Earth. The video also has a few tips about how to save trees and be environmentally conscious by recycling paper, buying recycled material, doing construction in an ethical way by using substitute materials such as drywall and reclaimed wood made from smaller chips, bringing bags to the grocery store or supermarket, and generally limiting our carbon footprint.

  • DEAR JEWISH EDUCATORS: Please transliterate the name of this holiday correctly! It's "Tu BiShvat." Pronounced "too -- beesh -- vat." There is no sh'va na' in the name of the holiday. Therefore do not use apostrophes in your transliterations.

Tu biShvat or Tu Bishvat or Tu BiShvat.

If you don't understand why the apostrophes are wrong, ask your friendly local Hebrew teacher (such as myself) to explain it.

    Happy Jewish Arbor Day!

  • @natashanataniela My apologies. I always thought it was spelled with sh'va (like "B'reishit"), but its really spelled with a chirik. I had never seen the word with nikudim before today. Thanks and happy Tu Bishvat. :)

  • This is a great video, you mind if I use it as a teaching tool. I am a religous school teacher and this is a great video for teaching kids the importance of Tu B'Shvat.

  • Go for it! Thanks for watching!

  • Explain why Israeli Jews (supposedly religious ones) think they can violate Deuteronomy 20:19-20 and cut down fruit-bearing Olive Trees in areas where Palestinians live?

  • the "custom" of planting trees does not go back hundreds of years, the zionists made it up. It is true that we have been eating trees for hundreds of years

  • @GHcool You got it! The sh'va in "Sh'vat" changes from na' to naH when the preposition "b'" is prefixed. And then sh'va in the prefix changes into a Hirik. Same phenomenon with all words whose first vowel is a sh'va, such as "Y'rushalayim" or, as you correctly noted, "B'reishit." That's why "in Jerusalem" is "BEErushalayim."

I see you corrected the vid title. :-) I guess it's too late to fix it in the actual vid.

    Happy TubiShvat.

  • when i saw in the description that he travels to the year 2525, i wasn't sure, at first, if that was the by the Gregorian calendar, or by the Hebrew calendar XD

but then i saw it's the future.
