"The Bookie's Daughter"
Written and performed by Darlene White at NEW STAGE Performing Arts Center (NSPAC) in Pittsfield, Mass., on August 15th, 2011.
"In "The Bookie's Daughter" writer and storyteller Darlene White weaves the true and funny account of her life, beginning in a tenement neighborhood with a jittery mom who runs illegal racetrack gambling (known as "Bookmaking") and who holds marathon poker games in their tiny chaotic apartment.  The only books in the house are a fake bible and weekly installments of the National Enquirer, which Darlene at age six, reads avidly."
...
"... With unblinking candor and dark humor, Darlene blends street wise savvy and exquisite use of language in a way that makes her stories vivid, and almost visible. Her bold touch for the telling detail weaves meaning and mythology into her stories, ultimately offering her listeners the deft and artful tale of a life truly observed."
