Enjoyed your rant. I am trying to decide when to confront my family and how. My sister and her husband sort of co pastor a church, they are christian fundamentalists. They live in a trailer on my property near my house. My sister went to Harvard so she is intelligent. I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out why in this one area of her life she is so delusional. It's dishonest really, I don't know how they can think they have an answers to questions they haven't asked.

No one should believe in evolution, they should be persuaded by the mountains of evidence to accept evolutionary theory (plural) as the best explanation for biological diversity and other biological phenomena on our planet and probably elsewhere if life exists. "Believe" is for Jesus and Allah.

@amaxamon You're absolutely right. If I misspoke and said that you'll have to forgive me, although you must admit some words and phrases are so common in our language that breaking the habit of using them can be difficult. But you are correct, belief is best left in church, evidence is what's required in science.

@piewacker Hey, no problem, I'm just doing what you're doing only in text instead of in video form ;) I appreciate your vids. It's very confusing for believers when we say "believe," they think it weakens our argument. So I refrain from talking abt evolution as a single monolithic force of nature, which it isn't. I break it down and bring it up one point at a time. This can take a long time but it's more effective, I've found.

@amaxamon I agree. It's something I try to do as well. It's amazing how so many people are just misinformed when it comes to natural selection. They've been led to believe by so many that it's all random chance that when it's explained clearly and simply that it's isn't, but rather the non random selection of random mutation most (at least in my experience) seem to get it.

@piewacker All this drives me crazy all the time. But it's everywhere, which is why I haven't made religion a special whipping boy. 9/11 was an "inside job," vaccinations cause autism, William Shakespeare was a front for a conspiracy etc. It is everywhere. I just try in my small way to teach people to apply the same logic to everything. I learn patience in this way...slowly.

@amaxamon Yep, the most important skill we can try and impart to people is critical thinking.
