All right, so I have wanted to try out doing this sort of thing for a while now but was pretty intimidated by the whole thought of doing an image transfer. I decided to test it out today and I had success. One of my hugest apprehensions before was the fact that people always say you have to use gel medium and I never had any, or at least not the type that other people have used.

I decided to test out another way using a cheaper alternative, Mod Podge! Quite cheap and pretty handy, a lot of mixed media artists say they prefer soft or heavy gel medium, generally they suggest Golden brand. I don't know, but I do know now that Mod Podge is technically a 'gel medium' and it works as far as transferring images is concerned. I was pretty pleased about that.

I will post up a step by step tutorial on my blog at www.iamlindsayrose.blogspot.com if you want to check it out. There are plenty online and it's really quite simple but I was so excited and I totally caught it on tape so I thought I would share!

I highly recommend trying it out, it's really one of those moments where you feel like I little kid watching the vinegar and baking soda volcano explode for the first time. I bet my mouth was wide open!

  • I cant beleive that worked so well, I actually tried this lastnight and it did not work in my favor, I tried wetting the paper on the back side, Because someone told me to do that. It was one big mess :/

  • well done i have used the packing clear tape to transfer along time ago

great to see modgepodge works cos i have some!

    thanks

  • Does anyone know how to transfer a picture from Paint to Gimp? lol.

  • cool video! thanks

by the way, what's music is playing there?

  • Thanks for the post! I was at the art store today and walked out because the medium was ridiculously over priced. Next trip I'll be sure to NOT skip the Mod Podge isle:)

  • Will this work with color inkjet print outs and on canvas?

  • Great video! Thank you for sharing your idea. Can't wait to do it myself! (:

  • Lovely transfer! I discovered this, too, when I moved over the summer and lost my gel medium during the move. Great alternative and a hack of a lot cheaper. Really, I don't see a difference in quality and Modge Podge comes in both matte and glossy, so you can use whichever you like best. Nice of you to make a video sharingyour discovery with other artists on a budget who'd really like to start doing image transfers. Hugs :-)

  • Cool vid for a cheaper solution than using gel paste. You'll have an easier time removing the paper if you wet the back of it before you start rubbing.

  • cool!! I´ve tried and it is perfect!! Thank you for sharing...xoxo
