shame on Subaru for not correcting this - piston slap, bearing noise or whatever! - there are far to many of these issues out there for it to be something owners should have to deal with IMO
-
either way you are fucked.
-
that is your typical piston slap
-
Diagnosis: Sounds like an old tractor.
Treatment: Burn it.
-
sounds like a typical subaru of that vintage, like a fucking awesome sewing machine.
-
Combination of both. At idle it's piston slap. At 2500rpm it's rod knock.

I own a 98 legacy outback. There is a mixture adjustment for fuel and air. Adjusting this can make the engine pure like no other. However having it set wrong will make the engine very noisey.
The unit has two screws on it. By losening the two screws you can rotate the mixture unit either clockwise or counter clockwise. Fartherost "CLOCKWISE" IS NOISIEST

the dohc 2.5's use a short skirt piston and are notoriously noisy on older motors
-
why that it happen?

sounds like bigend bearing
@rjherche Lol yeah whatever you say. I have heard TONS of boxer engines make that sound on a cold start up.
