UFC 108 - Predictions - Junior Dos Santos vs Gilbert Yvel

1)I think this fight all boils down to Junior Dos Santos is a potential future champion & Gilbert Yvel is not.

Junior Santos performs against top flight competition & Gilbert Yvel doesnt.

If you are like me, I really didnt know much about Junior Dos Santos or Gilbert Yvel. So here is some knowledge on them.

This is going to be more education than predictive. I have found the more you know about the fight the more interesting it is.

Most of these information come from Wikipedia.

2)Junior Dos Santos

i)He trains under Big Nog & Anderson Silva.

ii)Brown belt in BJJ

iii)He currently reigns as the Brazilian heavyweight kickboxing champion with a record of 18 - 0.

vi)He has only lost once to a guy who he originally beat. He lost by arm bar.

v)Fights in the UFC:

a)Fabricio Werdum, KO in 1:21 of 1st round

b)Stefan Struve, KO @ 0:54 of 1st round

c)Mirko Filipovic, KO @ 2:00 of 3rd round

d)Do you see the pattern?

All KOs.

vi)Young lion at 26 (rounded up, Birthday at January 30) & @236.

3)Gilbert Yvel

i)Age 33 & weighs in at 235, no great weight disparities between the two.

ii)Good striker who utilizes Muay Thai.

iii)Ground game is mostly defensive.

iv)Yvel has acquired, through a number of instances, a lingering reputation in the MMA community for his temper and poor sportsmanship in the ring. -wikipedia

a)My translation: others have found the limits of his talent & his true character is coming out.

We seen this in Mike Tyson too. Once others could get around his talent, he started using things to save face. Like bitting Evander Hollyfields ear. I could have won but I got hungry. Its an ego escape.

1998 he bit his opponent.

2004 he punched the referee

Since then he has tried to fight numerous times, but couldnt get a license due to his passed bad behavior.

b)Recently, he has fought, Josh Barnett & lost in the 3rd due to strikes.

c)Notable wins

i)He won over Pedro Rizzo in 1st by KO.

ii)He won over Cheick Kongo in 2nd by TKO

d)Notable losses

i)He lost to Jeremy Horn by decision

ii)He lost to Vitro Belfort by decision

iii)He lost to Dan Henderson by decision

He typically losses to top flight competition

4)With all that said, I see this being a stand up war with Junior Dos Santos KO Gilbert Yvel in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Probability breakdown

70% Junior Dos Santos & 30% Gilbert Yvel

  • i didnt like the stoppage the ref did to yvel....they dont do that type of stoppage when its middle weights or lower...theres gotta be a 5 second window of oppertunity if in a bad situation to get to a good situation...cause yvel was fine right after the ref called it...and i feel herb new he fucked up abit to....to bad

  • I would have liked to see two more seconds, maybe five. I do not think it changed the eventual outcome. I watched it again & for a split second Yvel did look like he gave up but then he rolled. I am looking forward to seeing Yvel fight again.

  • Yes...JDS vs Frank Mir certainly will a very exciting fight great boxers..i want JDS as next contender for the time shot

  • He cannot be denied much longer. He made quick work of Yvel.

  • Mir a legitimate threat? Cmon JDS knocks this fool out in the first round,as soon as Mir tries to take him he's gonna get uppercutted.

  • It's not about that, it's about the fact that after Yvel got rocked he tried getting up to his feet right, and if trying to stand up while your opponent is pounding on you isn't "trying to intelligently defend himself", i dont know what a fighter should do then.

    Early stoppage no doubt.

  • shouldn't it be JDS is the legitimate threat to mirr since hes the up and comeing.
