Today I talk about a piece of camera gear that some of you may already know about... the monopod! Monopods are commonly used by photographers, but filmmakers can benefit from the super small, lightweight design and amazing versatility this piece of gear! The monopod can be used to support stationary shots, stabilize handheld shots, and can even be used as a camera crane or jib! (as seen in the Test Film Mini Movie)

The monopod shown in today's episode is a FotoPro Brand (available at meritline.com)

  • I was wondering if you can use connectors in the middle of your example with some elastic type string/rope so it can be pulled apart and folded into thirds like a tent pole?

  • @TheTeksone yes, that could work!

  • Wow great video, I shoot a web-series on the t2i and I may just take a mono-pod out this weekend when we're shooting one of the final episodes.

  • @Phasefirefilms I haven't stopped using mine since I've gotten it! Best piece of gear I never about!

  • i use a painters pole, they are able to extend real far real cheap. making it 1/4-20 is tough, you gotta but a paint roller, cut it halfway up, then run a longish 1/4-20 and some washers and a nut through there.then you can add a Sima quick release plate (which i discovered first!! Hura!)

  • If you cut the PVC in half and drill a hole about an inch and a half from the opening. Then take a slittly smaller PVC and slide it inside. Take a screw and tighten it in you can make it adjustable only carrying on piece.

  • I'm gonna go get one, when I get some cash lol

  • I was intrigued after I saw this video, but I had problems finding a cheap and light enough monopod. That was until I found Vanguard MP-2 from a local mall. My friend, whose project I'm producing at the time, had never even heard of monopods, but when he saw it he got really exited.

  • You crack me up so much. You remind me of my little brother when we were in high school. Oh, & the information is very, very useful, too.

  • i just got one a weeks back it is a good thing to have

  • Did anybody else like this because of the awesome slow motion "hwa-pshhh" sound effect?

  • I've been using a monopod for my projects for quite some time now. I love it. I use a monfrotto monopod, but here's a little trick I've been keeping to myself for a while: There's these sand bags called Baby boa sand bags. They wrap around the bottom of the monopod, and shazam...you've got a weighted ghetto steadycam....the sandbags are a bit pricey for a stupid sand bag, (like 30-40 bucks) however, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a glidecam...and you can figure out many many other uses

  • Great video!! Just wanted to report that I recently had this same idea about 2 months ago and videoed a wedding with the monopod.. Worked really great!
