The Tea Party Will Fail Unless It Fully Embraces Individualism as a Moral Ideal

The "Tea Party" lacks any intellectual foundation, and is mainly comprised of embarrassing mystics, acting on emotion; sometimes in costume. Though the overall sense of life is positive, I can't help but cringe at the false-representation I'm getting as a capitalist. If only their momentum could be harnessed and redirected.

I attended the 1st annual Tea Party Patriots "Summit" conference is Phoenix last February. Attendees, at least 2,000 of them, were full of enthusiasm to "take back our country", but lacked any fervor to shed their altruistic shackles. There is also a clear underlying Christian force in the movement. But there is hope. Yaron Brook received a standing ovation following his speech from the main stage on Saturday night. His break-out sessions were packed, too.

When did corporations become individuals? Somehow Ayn Rand followers, Republicans and Tea Party folk make this enormous jump.
Also, I feel that a human being is comprised of both a mind and a heart. While Ayn Rand tackled the mind with aplomb she seemed to forget about the heart entirely.

On second thought...Brad, altruism and collectivism are irrational mystical beliefs in the first place. No one can consistently advocate individual rights and altruistic christianity. I am finding that this philosophy is a whole; you can't accept a part without the rest. Deny reason as a means of knowledge and rational self-interest can't follow. (with apologies to Tom for my previous comment on facebook.)

@yolowell Rand wrote an essay about collecting money from welfare programs in "The Voice of Reason," where she stated that it was only just if one accepted the money not as a right, but as retribution for the government taking their money by force through taxation. Your point is completely invalid.

Which part of the Tea Party are you talking about?
It won't let me post the video but search......"Tea Party Member Stuns Crowd! ORIGINAL!!! "
Ayn Rand's writings have been immeasurably valuable in my life in helping me to develop healthy psychological boundaries. From my life many years ago as a guilt-ridden leftist, to my current state of pride and satisfaction, she has lifted me out of mental squalor.

The Teaparty has a lot of good people in it who know the value of small, limited government. But it also is full of christian mystics who don't understand individual liberty and would use the force of government to further a social conservative agenda.
