Bohemian Rhapsody is the Freddie Mercury masterpiece written in 1975. The title "Bohemian" refers to the "poor boy" narrator of the song, a follower of bohemianism: "living a wandering or vagabond life". A musical rhapsody is a "composition irregular in form and suggestive of improvisation". Hence, "Bohemian Rhapsody".
As an arrangement, Bohemian Rhapsody is nothing short of a larger-than-life, musical epic. It begins with an a cappella introduction, moves to a ballad, then begins a simulated operatic midsection. The music then moves to a hard-rock section and then returns back to the ballad style. The music then progressively becomes quieter until finally closing on a simple, quiet chord. The continual change in timing, key, mood and tempo make this arrangement one of the most unique, striking and entertaining pieces ever written.
