Salome is the story of the princess of Judea, who becomes infatuated with the prophet Jochanaän (John the Baptist). Scorned by the holy man, she demands and gets his head on a silver platter. Richard Strauss based the opera on an accurate German translation of Oscar Wildes stage play. It is a typical fin-du-siècle work, composed in an era that wavered between decay and renewal, and is populated by characters who reflect these circumstances. A spoilt child, Salome is consumed by intense yearnings. Surrounded by a world of excesses, she goes to extremes to get the love and attention she seeks. Employing suggestive tone painting and remarkably varied sound pallet, Strauss creates a heady, sultry atmosphere. With Salome modern psychology made its way onto the opera stage.

Like all peasants Peter mistakes his vulargarity as insights , he neither

understands Salome or more important Wilde .He is not naughty -he is ignorant

as is his cast of singers who lend themselves to this production .

i have to be honest. I am not too big on a lot of the modern opera productions. I guess this falls into the class of yet another "Euro-trash" production aye? Herod shooting up? Him and Herodias having sex under the table? Salome and Jochanaan ending up together at the end? Next we will be seeing a live orgy with naked actors on stage in the next production of Salome. I'm done!

Tenzij ik bij voorbaat zeker ben een prachtige enscenering te zullen zien. Tot zolang blijf ik genieten van de meesterlijke film van Götz Friedrich en Karl Böhm, met Teresa Stratas in de titelrol.

Orkest (Nederlands Philharmonisch) en solisten waren muzikaal goed, behalve Annalene Persson die een vreselijk dik vibrato etaleert en daardoor ook vaak detoneerde.

Vokaal waren Herodes (Gabriel Sadé) en Narraboth (Marcel Reijans) verbluffend goed.

DNO: voortaan maar weer Pierre Audi vragen!

Feitelijk is PK heel ouderwets. Want hij probeert te shockeren mijn zijn ideetjes, zoals de necrofilie met het lichaam van Narraboth, waaraan ook Jochanaän naar hartelust deelneemt. Met andere woorden: iedereen is een smeerlap. Maar dit soort taferelen kennen we al uit oude films als Caligula en Salo. Niks nieuws dus en niets positiefs toegevoegd aan dit meesterwerk Integendeel. Na twee slechte voorstellingen (Dresden 2007 en Amsterdam 2009) hoef ik niet meer zo nodig naar deze opera.

Wat een flutvoorstelling was dat gisteren. Very bad! Geen dramatische ontwikkeling. Iedereen is ook voortdurend aanwezig op het podium. Geen spanning. Wel veel obsceniteiten, en gelach en gefluit dwars door de prachtige muziek van Strauss. Peter Konwitschny houdt dus niet van z.g. Werktreue. En wellicht ook niet van het werk van Wilde en Strauss. Hij houdt wèl héél veel van Peter Konwitschny en van het z.g. regietheater (waarbij de regie allesbepalend is en de inhoud mag worden gewijzigd.
