Scene from "The Wrestler" (1974), produced by and starring Verne Gagne. In this scene, Ed Asner is the local promoter giving a soliloquy defending the sport of pro wrestling to real-life Minneapolis journalists Jim Klobuchar and Larry Batson. Anbody know who the third guy is?

  • I have a suggestion that the third journalist is the Strib's Robert T. Smith. I think that's likely correct. I can vaguely recall his b&w image at the head of his columns.

  • Batson is the guy on the far left who never speaks. Klobuchar is the guy in the middle who mixes it up with Asner. The mystery man is the bigger guy on the far right who introduces the other two. To make it worse, Jim Klobuchar is introduced as "Bob", while Larry Batson is introduced as "Larry."

  • Oh, well. Forget everything I said, then. :) Although I can correct you on ONE thing - Batson DOES get in a whopping two lines at 2:20 into this clip.

  • I stand corrected. Batson does have a lines! I picked up the DVD in a Target $1 bin. Two titles on one disc. The other is the Evel Knievel biopic, starring George Hamilton as the main cover title. "The Wrestler" was the bonus film.

  • One of the best scenes from this 1974 movie, The Wrestler. Ed Asner (Mary Tyler Moore) plays a feisty pro wrestling promoter trying to defend the sport from some skeptical Minnesota sports reporters. The worst scene I saw from this movie was the ending. Very clumsy editing.

  • It says Ric Flair is in this movie. I watched it a couple of times and didn't see him once. I'm assuming he had a different look at the time?

  • ...and made the cover of "Sports Illustrated" in 1957. Two photos, not much help deciding if the guy in your clip is a 40-year-old version of the guy in the magazine. :)

YouTube doesn't like any of my links so I'll put them on MY tumblr (CRZ) if you're really bored.

  • Howdy, Chuck!

Believe it or not, I haven't seen this movie yet. So I could be totally wrong, but let's not let that stop me...

Assuming the character received a credit (Batson and Klobuchar did), and also assuming that the character's name is also the actor's name (another safe assumption given all the "Himselfs" in the IMDb cast list) perhaps we can narrow it down to the only "Bob" IN that cast list - Bobby Cox.

Cox (1934-2003) was the QB of the Golden Gophers during the 1956 season...
