got a question for you:

My son (7 years old) is into this heli too... heheheh but I'm not prepared to unleash him with my equipment. Now he's on the simulator and I told him not to just crash it anywhere he wants... he needs to land or try to land it every time. How do you teach him the responsibilities that comes along with this kind of hobby?

I discovered that Justin had talent around 2 1/4 and had no intention of teaching him that young. All the flying skills (airplane at that time) were self taught. As soon as he was able to control the direction, I started him on the safety issues. I used a scenery with a runway and a pit area. He was told never to cross the centerline of the runway.

part 2: When I felt that he could have avoided a crash but he didn't, he would get a timeout (no sim flying for 1 day or sometimes few days). He absolutely hated not being able to fly. It worked out good for me as his biggest punishment is taking away the sim box so he can't fly. He has yet to cross the centerline of the runway toward the pit. I did however got yelled by him for doing that. Ultimately, the decision to let him fly rests on you so focus on safety.

I don't think he will need your help in flying but you must teach him about the safety issues. If you feel that he can safely navigate, try him on a blade cp or trex 450. Remember that everybody crashes! The important thing is not about avoiding the crash but where you crash. Only fly at the club field so will learn to understand and respect field rules. For now,

For now, if he crashs, he will not understand the financial aspect of it so make it uncomfortable for him by delaying the repair as much as you can.

very impressive, I just hope daddy isn't pressurizing him on learning this hobby, my point it, I hope the kid is having fun all the time and never for one second has been frustrated by the pressure from daddy!

Not to worry! His biggest punishment is taking away his sim controller. This is a hobby isn't it? What would be the reason to push a child do a hobby thing?

The young man is nice with the heli. Teach me next. I'll be happy to learn how to hover with out crashing. Little Justin is my new HERO.

Safety is always no 1, although he can go anywhere now, he is not permitted to deliberately crash into anything or even just kill the throttle and let it crash when he gets bored.

thanks, good advise. He now can take off (obviously), land and also hover. He's practicing forward flight and land safely. I only tell him what the sticks do to the heli plus the basics of heli flying and that's it... he has the freedom to go anywhere in the 'field' for now, I'll put in the rules once he gets used to the controls and he is controlling the heli not the other way around...
