A comparison video showing some clips filmed with both the Canon 7d and Panasonic GH1 with settings as closely matched as possible.

The GH1 has been hacked to film at 50mbit AVCHD.

Please don't take the test too seriously as it's just a quick comparison! What it does show is that the GH1 is capable of some very sharp, highly detailed footage. The 7d is very soft in comparison.

To read more about this please go to prolost.com/blog/2010/9/2/ha-ha-very-funny-canon-now-get-back-to-work.html

There are some comparison clips there that demonstrate the low detail capture of the 5dmkII. It might be outputting 1080p but that doesn't mean it's actually showing the full 1080p resolution!

  • I know it does look out of focus but trust me, it wasn't. It was focused as well as I possibly could! Basically I've had the 7d for nearly a year now and I've learned to avoid shooting wide shots as the image often looks so soft as to appear out of focus! Where it really looks great is with shallow depth of field, like during an interview situation with the background well out of focus or for shooting short films where you really want to make the most of the shallow depth of field.

  • just bought a gh1 and hacked the hell out of it! you cant beat it for the price. it almost holds its own weight when put up against the 5d mark ii

  • i need help please reply

-do you think this is safe to do? cause im gonna hack my gh1

do i have a big chance to do this successfully?

  • Thanks for this. I have just this day got a 550d/T2I and now I hear about this hacked GH1. So obviously I've just started to tell myself that a softer image is better for a film look. There is no doubting that these tests show the GH1 is sharper. Although the first shot in the garden with the 7d seems to be out of focus. It would be really good to see it compared with a still shot like you did in the second test to show that it is indeed the video mode and not just different focusing.
