(2007) Series in which Paul Murton uncovers the history of Scotland's most famous clans. For almost 400 years the MacDonalds dominated the Highlands and Islands of Scotland but at the end of the 15th century this mighty clan was ripped apart by a bitter family feud. The struggle between father and son had disastrous consequences from which the MacDonalds never recovered.

Godfrey MacDonald (8:22) and Ranald MacDonell (8:53) have extremely distant connections to Clan Donald, resting on the theory that a single individual over 200 years ago, representing one of 128 ggggg grandparents, is their male line ancestor. It is from that individual of 128 who is probably his ancestor that Godfrey claims descent from "Somerled." Their wealthy American supporter Mark MacDonald (on the right, 8:44) does not even know why he has the surname.

This could have been a great documentary but is eventually undone by the presence of the phoney chiefs and their American supporters. Nonetheless, thank you jamgilp for uploading it.

@MacMhicAlasdair the court if the lion, puts all of there time and effort into finding direct descendants of the past clan chiefs, its actual not that hard in lord godfrey's case because clan macdonald is so big and it can be traced from father to son, why would you say he has very distant connection to clan donald ? he is the chief of the whole clan
