Ten years of constant cell phone use may lead to a three times greater risk of brain cancer, according to expert testimony presented Monday in a U.S. Senate hearing. Bay Area locals seemed unalarmed by the news, however.

The research, presented by the National Institute of Health (NIH), also found that teenagers who constantly used cell phones were four times more likely to get a brain tumor.

Children have a configuration of their skull that does allow penetration of cell phone radiation deeper, said John Buchner, Associate Director of the National Toxicology Program, a division of NIH.

The shocking announcement was met with stern questioning by a visibly concerned Arlen Specter (D-Pennsylvania), who chaired the hearing.

Are you saying there's potentially a greater risk? said Specter.

There potentially is a greater risk, said Buchner.

Bay Area residents seemed generally unconcerned when confronted with this news by KTVU Health and Science Editor John Fowler.

No worries, no, said Mike Passerine of Walnut Creek, whose cell phone is his primary means of communication.

Oakland resident Janoah Smith expressed a similar sentiment. Any health thing is going to be arthritis from texting," she said, "not anything from cell phones in my ears."

But Rachel Borja, of San Francisco, said she has limited her cell phone use for health reasons.

The cell phone gets really heated up against your ear, she said. Its not really good, at least I dont think so not really healthy for you. http://www.emfnews.org/headset.html
