'Bess, You Is my Woman Now' - solo jazz piano tutorial. This was improvised from the leadsheet (melody and chords) in Sher Music's 'Standards Real Book' pp 52-52. It was completely improvised - the notation was created later. I tried to play it fairly simply - not straying too far from the beautiful melody - just a few deviations from the original basic harmony. Not too many jazz pianists have covered this one - I listened to 2 versions especially - one by George Cables, and the other as a part of a Porgy and Bess medley by Dudley Moore (and, of course, the Miles Davis 'Porgy and Bess' album). There is a very clear high definition version on my website at http://www.bushgrafts.com . The printable pdf file is on my DVD ($25 for over 145 transcriptions and 9 plus hours of instructional video). Details on my website

  • LIke it when you start to swing!!!!

Doug, are ou reading from the sheet music in front of you?

  • The sheet music I am playing from is just in leadsheet format (Sher Music's 'Standards Real Book pp 51-52). The notation came later - derived from the midi file that I recorded as I played.

  • actually i was looking for the miles davis version of this song lol. good job though

  • doug, I just love this, but with you so often inserting all 8 half-notes in bars like 7, 8, 23, 27, 28, I can't help thinking bess, bess, bess, bess, you, you, you, you, is, is, is, is... Interestingly this disappears in the up-tempo middle section.

  • I'm mystified by bars 4-5. Where are they in the original melody?

  • Beautiful, Doug! What a super talented jazz pianist you are! Thank you so much for posting this, I am glad to see that there are 194 videos in your channel and will listen to you a lot. I adored your "She's leaving home". Keep it up!
