@mcronrev One of the best automotive milestones was the OBD 2 connector. Installed in 1996 and newer cars.without this you would need a Bucket Full of different connectors.OBD 2 is a very responsive system which controls the vehicle electronics while collecting data. Electronic devices have complicated failure methodology from total failure to functioning well with minor defects. The OBD 2 computer monitors data streams and has a defined standard to activate the CHECK ENGINE light.
@asemastertechl1 A code reader is a very limited device. It may not empower you to the extent suggested here. codes may be multiple and related or unrelated. A scanner or lab scope with a high sampling rate is often needed for a better understanding of engine problems. Responding to basic codes only can send you off on a very expensive quest. The implementation of [CAN] controlled area network into modern cars has made diagnostic work easier and ironically much more difficult; simultaneously.
For the AutoTap: it works with all '96 and newer OBDII compliant vehicles. There is usually a sticker either under the hood or on the drivers door pillar that lets you know if the vehicle is OBDII compliant.

Interesting, I assume this works for all mainstream manufacturers after 1996?
