Jenny Jones makes French toast with melted dark chocolate instead of syrup. "It's like having dessert for breakfast!"
Jenny's Chocolate French Toast
If it takes a little chocolate to get your family to eat whole grain bread, this is the way - so no white bread allowed! The chocolate will melt so you don't even need syrup.
4 slices 100% whole wheat bread
3 eggs
½ cup 1% milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet, milk, or 1 ½ oz. solid chocolate of your choice)
1 teaspoon canola oil for greasing pan
1. In a large flat-bottom bowl or a pie pan, whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla.
2. Soak bread slices in pairs, turning once.
3. Heat a large pan over medium-high heat. Add a teaspoon of oil and cook bread on one side in pairs. After 2 minutes, when bottom is golden brown, flip one slice over, top with 2 tablespoons chocolate pieces, and top with the cooked side of the 2nd slice. In other words, you're putting the two browned (& hot) sides together with chocolate in between, like a chocolate sandwich.
4. When the sandwich is brown on the bottom, carefully turn it over and brown the other side.
5. Serve plain or with a little powdered sugar. No syrup is needed.
*Serves two

Wow! Cant wait to try this! Can you mix melted chocolate into the actual egg mixture? Thanks:)

@ParisAlwaysx - Hmmm, I'm not sure that would work. The chocolate would have to be completely cooled or it could cook the egg. And it could make the egg mixture too heavy to soak into the bread. Let me know if you try it - I could be wrong...

@adachi143 - The fork was a gift and I asked but my friend didn't remember where she got it, but she did find it on Amazon (just enter "freeloader fork" into the search box).
