My Spooky Gunship Aircraft and Crew flying a combat mission around Danang Viet Nam 1967

.....PUFF the Magic Dragon Call sign; SPOOKY . . . with 200,000 candle power flares to light up the night and 3 mini-guns each able to spit out 6,000 rounds per minute (every 4th one a red tracer) is it any wonder that captured Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army documents referred to the "Dragon's" reputation, containing orders specifically to "not attack the Dragon because it would only infuriate the monster."

  • Dad tells the story about a night ambush gone bad when he and his company of marines were trapped on a hillside surrounded by 3000+ NVA. He calls in air strike expecting napalm but "snoopy" showed up, dropped flares then "Puff" opened up on the NVA advancing on their position Varrumfff!! Varrumfff!! all night long until the morning, each time NVA headed up the hill they walked into a meat grinder of tracers bouncing around. He was CO of E-2-5 22miles SW of Danang, summer and fall of '67.

  • my grandpa - Lt. Col. WW Crandell flew these in Vietnam.. he had flown C-47s in Korea and had a lot of experience with the plane.. he was called up to fly the Puff the Magic Dragon gunships in Vietnam... I saw commendation letters in his war chest stating how many kills he had during some big offensive against our bases... I wonder if you flew with him?? He said one night he ran out of ammo, but kept ddropping flares and the VC would stay hidden just knowing his plane was overhead.....

  • I like how they do not have the accurate sounds for the engines and guns firing

  • My Dad was on one of the first of four original Puffs, the one oufitted with 30 cal machine guns. These aircraft were not camouflaged.

  • Thanks for serving. Do you know which engines your aircraft was equipped with?

  • YOU GO PUFF!
