Omamori (御守) are small paper or fabric packets received in exchange for donations given to a Japanese Shinto or Buddhist temple. The front of the packets, which are not to be opened, show the name of the temple at which they were received. And the back of the packets show a benefit gained for possession of the packet. Omamori are typically sealed with a Japanese Tassel Knot, which the following video will show you how to tie.

is the link to a pic of my first attempt. Next pic in album is the back. I finished it off with a True Lover's knot, then "tasseled" the ends. Jimmy (AKA aknotter &/or igktpab)

  • @acan4me - I like it!

  • What happens if you open it?

  • @LonewolfStrikes - It is said that omamori should never be opened or they lose their protective capacities.

  • @JD, I was born and raised in Japan. And I would love to learn any other Japanese Knot work you happen to be familiar with. There is one I would like to suggest, the rope work on the hilt of a katana. Do you know how it is done?

  • @legendofmatty - The Katana tie is a lot simpler than it looks, and is typically performed with ribbon. If I do show how to do it (I'd need to find a replica katana first - not in the market for a real one - very expensive). I'd likely show it as a Midweek Bonus Video.
