D.C. Council approves marriage recognition bill

The D.C. City Council voted 12-1 to give final approval to a bill that allows the city to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states and countries.

The vote took place in a Council chamber packed by LGBT activists who backed the legislation and ministers and members of their churches who opposed it.

Clearly Marion Barry was playing the odds. The man was an activist and as Mayor (elected at large) he could be more liberal. Now that he is merely a councilman and must answer to a smaller constituency (Ward 8) he must play to their wishes and prejudices. He was polite in his rejection of equality, but he was wrong. I think its clear on his face that maybe even he was uncomfortable with voting no.
