Untreated and contaminated storm water runs directly into the Nissequogue River and Harrison Creek from storm drains on St. Johnland Road. This run-off water is a safety issue to the community as well as to the eco-system surrounding the old pond area. The run-off water floods the roadway of St. Johnland Road as well as the surrounding area causing a hazard to both automobiles attempting to cross the flooded roadway and the residents living in the area.
We propose that the Town of Smithtown consider the possibility of creating a system of storm drains to catch the rain water, up-land of St. Johnland Road at Riviera Road and North of Landing Avenue. Currently there are no storm drains in this area. The general idea being to catch the storm water at the source and not allowing the contaminated water to flow into the Harrison Creek Area.
The soils of the surrounding area have high clay content and do not absorb rain water well. Therefore we recommend industry experts be consulted to insure that most modern, efficient, cost effective, eco-friendly system be constructed. There are several public and private grants available to assist in preventing storm run-off from entering the eco-system and we highly recommend exploring these opportunities.
Little suggestion: Why don't you worry less about a little bit of water on St. Johnland road, and more about the abuses occurring at St. Johnland care center on St. Johnland road? Don't be so certain everything's hunky-dory there just because they have a five-star rating - it's not.
