My grandfather was one of the miners. He said that a wire rope was put in the Yukon river in the autumn before the river froze, the other end was fastened to a bell on top of a post in the town. When the ice thawed the bell would strart to ring. The miners had a sweep stake on the time when the bell would start ringing, the winner could win many thousands of dollars.
