In this http://www.artistshousemusic.org video interview, Carl Beatty, a veteran engineer and Professor of Production and Engineering at Berklee College of Music, discusses how the era of digital recording, with its presets, wizards and unlimited tracks, encourages novice engineers and producers to get lazy about capturing performances that are musical and tight enough for the final mix. He also describes how people who are serious about their recording careers can re-visit the studio techniques of the analog age to learn some recording best practices that work equally well in an analog studio as on a home ProTools setup.

  • @Vanjal why not, vinyl is better than digital sound, if something is good, why change it?

  • @vleon1012 Fix it in the marketing lol

  • While I agree on "can't fix it in the mix (always)" part, I really don't understand this bitching about DAW workflow. Whoever wants to frustrate himself and clients canb go "old school" with tapes and shit, hiss, noise, low quality/resolution audio etc. WTF is wrong with these people ? Time goes on and we can't let music stay in vinyl form.

  • Great video! I totally agree!

  • I am a sound engineer in Barcelona Spain and I can say that the musicians I records get surprised because I look for s good sound from the beginning and they often ask me why can't I fix it later. I say that later I am more limited. the idea is to take it correctly from the beginning. The look at it as a strange thing.

  • @sdeanmusic haha nice one

  • A Monkey playing a solo? WTF!!! LMAO!!!

  • I never say we'll fix it in the mix, I may say from time to time, I'll fix it in post-production. Say for example a drummer plays a part very well but speeds up at one section, I'll just fix that section by moving things and using cross-fades.

  • come back in 20 years and tell me that..
