The treatment of prisoners of war in Islam. Taken from the lecture, "Practical Lessons from the Seerah for the Modern Age" at Peace Conference 2009 by Sheikh Abdul Bary Yahya.

"Look at the state of the Ummah, someone like me who should be giving karate lessons, is teaching you about Islam" -AbdulBary Yahya
Abdul Bary Yahya was born in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and very soon thereafter immigrated to the USA with his family. He grew up in Seattle, WA, USA. After completing his primary and secondary education there he began his studies at the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
Upon graduation from the Islamic University of Madinah's College of Shariah, Abdul Bary Yahya returned to Vietnam and Cambodia and became a teacher and director of the Revival of Islamic Heritage Society in Cambodia and the Umm Al Qura Charity Organization in Vietnam.
He presently resides in Seattle, WA with his family, and is an instructor with Al Maghrib Institute, an organization that provides trademark double-weekend seminars leading students towards a bachelor's degree in Islamic Studies. He is currently the Imam (spiritual leader and advisor) of Masjid Jaamiul Muslimeen in Seattle, WA, USA
Of course, the mistreatment of Gilad Shalit disproves all of this--pity Islam in practice does not treat prisoners as well as Israel does.

Whereas the Romans, the Assyrians, and Persians, used to put out their prisoners’ eyes with hot irons and flay them alive, feeding their skins to dogs, such that the prisoners preferred death to life!
But Islam taught their followers to treat prisoners with mercy. Describing the People of Paradise, Allah said [76:8]: "They feed food, despite their love of it, to the needy, orphans & prisoners of war. We're only feeding you seeking Allah's Rewards; we don't want from you any reward or thanks."

The Prophet's Companion, Ibn 'Abbaas (رضي الله عنه) narrated:
"On the day of Badr the Prophet commanded the Muslims to be kind to their prisoners, so they used to put the prisoners before themselves when it came to food… they would give food to these prisoners even though they themselves desired it and were in need of it."
(Recorded by Ibn Katheer in his 'Tafseer')

A Scottish Orientalist by the name of Sir William Muir - a hostile critic of Islam - wrote:
"In pursuance of Mahomet’s commands, the citizens of Medina and such of the emigrants who possessed houses, received the prisoners and treated them with much consideration. ‘Blessings be on the men of Medina’, said one of these prisoners in the later days, ‘they made us ride while they themselves walked. They gave us wheaten bread to eat when there was little of it, contenting themselves with dates."
