RT performing 'Keep Your Distance' in Toronto back in 1991 with Shawn Colvin as a member of the band. The audio suffers from a hum but it's watchable in my opinion..

  • "Fate is only Fooling with us Friend." what a great line. any foolish romantic would be wise to take it to heart. i certainly have. thanks for posting. RT is one of the best.

  • The ultimate "kiss off" song. I've used lines from this song for just that purpose, sometimes attributed, sometimes not. Thanks for posting it!

  • Perfect antidote to those nights we sit, melancholy and ridiculous and nostalgic.

  • Great live version of this RT classic, possibly outdoing the studio version on Rumor & Sigh. Should be commercially available. Richard - any chance of putting out?

  • This song kept me sane during my divorce. God bless Richard Thompson.

  • Love this song, the Coope, Boyes and Simpson a capella version is damn good too...waiting for it on Youtube.

  • ok, i just landed in RT heaven - I thought i had all the profound thoughts about his briliance! thxs for posting - it's my all time favorite RT song. much wiser and more poignant than any kiss-off song - it's a "i'll always be in love with you" lament. Bonnie Raitt is a huge fan of his, and you'll find his songs (and sometimes just his exquisite guitar contributions) on several of her albums. (She also turned me on to Paul Brady). Peace.

  • What a monster talent. One of the best guitarists on the planet, decades of brilliant songs, and he's famous largely among musicians.Across a Crowded Room is so personal and universal at the same time. We've got to spread the word about RT.

  • I do think Collister and Gregson were the support vocalists on Rumor and Sigh, but clearly this is Shawn (and someone else) all the way.

  • remember this tour well. Shawn opened solo, then joined Richard's band for their entire set, playing rhythm and singing harmony. Buddy & Julie Miller covered this song capably too (likely how it came to the attention of Patty's handlers), though NO cover will ever match the ominous power and brooding beauty of the original. when it comes to dark musings on love -- or friendship -- gone wrong, who could possibly match RT?

  • Patty Loveless does a wonderful cover of this amazing song. It was on youTube for a short while, then gone. I wish it was back .....

  • what a brave accurate statement ! great
