3. Technology to the Rescue: In the 1970's and 1980's, it became clear that bigger telescopes *can* be built, thanks to new technologies that heavily depend on the use of computer power. Efficient telescope mounts, thin and/or segmented mirrors, and active optics made it possible to construct 8-meter-class telescopes. Still newer technologies, like adaptive optics and interferometry, even deal with the blurring effects of the Earth's atmosphere.

The "Eyes On The Skies" movie explores the many facets of the telescope - the historical development, the scientific importance, the technological breakthroughs, and also the people behind this ground-breaking invention, their triumphs and failures. It is presented by Dr. J, aka Dr. Joe Liske, a professional astronomer from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and host of the Hubblecast video podcast.

"Eyes On The Skies" is an official movie for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and the International Astronomical Union, produced by ESA/Hubble (the same team as behind the widely distributed movie "Hubble - 15 Years of Discovery").

  • I am glad that so many people are interested in astronomy. They do the work and I get the results.

  • "this guys voice makes me want to kill everyone on earth! fuck he is annoying! other than that great vid!"

Seee... Science leads you to killing people :)

    still loving it :)

  • walt, i'm sorry you're upset by people coming to America with hope. But that's what they do, and that hope gives way to a good life in this country through hard work and determination. Usually.

Of course Capitlism has helped breed the intellectual freedom and the freedom to experiment in this country. Away from the direct rule of a king of dictator, many great minds flourished , and especially Capitalism allowed the great industrialists that built the infrastructure of this country. .......

  • In fact, these days medical science is king overseas, and its not the only one. Japanese are kicking our butt in a few areas.

Science also happened before capitalism too, not at any less a pace for its time.

  • I wouldnt have attacked you for saying anything, that was true but then you said something that did upset me, which is this idea that just because somebody comes here with hope, that such hope has any validity to it.

Saying good things about any country is fine. But your original positive about america was a lie anyway.

Capitalism has nothing to do with prosperity of sciences.

In fact, many great sciences have happened at universities and through government funding.
