Niggerballs were large round sweets (candy in USA) were also called 'Aniseed Balls'. They were black (aniseed/licourice flavour) and as you sucked one, it changed to about 7 different colours. They took about 8 minutes to finish - and were expensive!!!! Four for a penny (i.e. 48 for 10c - South African money) which would be about 50 for 1 UK newpenny! Those were the good old days! This chap singing was certainly not South African! The original song, sung by Jeremy Taylor was "Ag Pleez Daddy"

It's years since I heard this song, performed by a South African singer at the Cambridge Folk Club. I wish I could remember his name. He told a story of how me was forced into exile from SA when he was refused entry after a tour in the UK. "Why?" he asked, and the security guy replied "We don't have to give you that information."
