This is generally what a portage trail was like and how a canoe was carried on one's shoulders. As you can observe at the end, it was a bit treacherous. Thankfully, the only time I slipped was when I had a camera in hand, and not while carrying a canoe. The portages were by far the most grueling and taxing part of the trip. Only one, the first, was "easy". The rest included elevation changes and rocky terrain.
Along with the canoe all the packs and extra paraphernalia had to be transported. This meant at least 2 roundtrip trips down each trail. Getting into the water at the end was always quite a relief and we didn't mind the freezing temperature of the water at all after such a workout.
