Erm... kidna'. It sorta' "helps" find neutral when you're stopped. It isn't that you can only get neutral from a stop and only second while moving, it just makes it easier to get which ever you most likely need.

Yikes, I'm surprised you let her drag her feet along the ground like that...nice way to get a broken ankle or get yanked off the bike by getting your shoes snagged on something.

I know that when you are in neutral and go down you are in first. So does that mean when you take off from lets say a stop light, you go 1st N 2nd 3rd...?

You are correct with the gear pattern. 1-N-2-3-4-5. However, you can go directly from 1st to 2nd. Neutral is like a "half-step" or "half-click" so you would just need to tap it a little to go up or down into neutral instead of the full motion. Hope that makes sense.
