In the last installment of our Sound & Vision series, English Post-Punk singer Mark E Smith gave us a brief tour of his rise to fame with The Fall and the early influence of angry British Surrealism on his music.

@swanlee33 Strange tho what is perceived about MES, on a personal note, i've met him 3 or 4 times in my life, the first in a queue at Euston Station waiting for a train back to Manchester Piccadilly in 1984, i've always found him very polite and accommodating, i always got the feeling that Mark will always be decent if you are decent with him, a bit like anyone really?, if you ever get to meet him, i hope he's the same way to you :-)

the reason people only paint to the fall is that they have a prolific discography.no disrespect to the fall i love it but you can put any great artist with a long discrogrphy and paint,brian eno for example.

He was never "cool", even in 1982 he looked like some sort of greasy haired unfashionable geek. He may be knocking on now, but he has 100% more talent and originality than any of the shit you hear on the radio at the moment, and 1000% more talent than anything the fucking X factor could generate. Look below the fucking surface for gods sake.

I smoked a joint with Mark E Smith in Stockport in1979.
Fuck.
He turned me into a mental person and fucked me up for the rest of my life.
It's clearly my only memory...
