The owner said his crew "would be out gunned"..I don't get it..there was 20 crew members and 4 pirates. Or just hire a few more people to keep watch

They get away with it all the time. That may well be a yee haa ship but if its 200 miles away its as useful as a chocolate teapot.

the pirates hold the crew hostage and that way they get back to somalia safely and can demand a ransom. and in a lot of cases the us or British etc navy ships are too far away anyway to help.
