YEAR 1992! This game was once part of the Imagination Network, The Sierra Network, TSN, Game Point, all sorts of names it went by before the mainstream internet existed. The game was called Shadow of Yserbius. The network also had two sequels called Fates of Twinion and Ruins of Cawdor.

These are one step out of the world of text based muds and into the realm of graphical mmorpgs. You could call them first generation. 5 years before Ultima Online, 7 years before Everquest, and 10 years before World of Warcraft. You could call it a Proto MMORPG, it's still a mud, but it has graphics.

This video features my character, my wife's character, my friend's character, and some random online player fighting a horde of snakes and things. It was a story fight to get the robe of the dead king. Only by gathering all of the dead king's possessions and returning them to their rightful places will he be at peace and the deeper depths of the dungeon unlock.

Although the game has long since been taken down, a new server has recently been put up called Inn Revival. Check it out at the above links.

I played this for a little while but every time I got a phone call my internet would be lost. Took me forever to remember what the name of this game was. I'm glad it's still going.

@MichelleDri Dial up modems weren't able to handle the "Call Waiting" that came out about that time. You had to modify all your dial-up stuff to do something like *67 then the number, and it would disable it. Of course that was years and years ago, who still uses dial-up? Hehe.

Is it possible to run this game on Windows? My guess is no, but I loved playing Yserbius

@cwzwack You'll have to run a program called DOS BOX, that'll make to program think it's running in dos. There are special settings that have to be done for Yserbius and Inn Revival however. The easiest way is to download the Inn Revival installer in the video description, that's all auto-configured for you.

and even before there was HUD games like Mazewar, Island of Kesmai and even a game Luca's film got in action with Habitat and the first graphics MMo was Neverwinter Nights in 1991 by AOL
