Strange Thai Bug Sounds

We were at a remote camp in northeast Thailand when our host Ben (shown tending the fire) explained to us that the weird sounds we were hearing were in fact, some insect that he has never seen but only heard. Astute viewers will hear the sound of ice cubes entering a glass (prior to my pouring Suntory whisky) just before the video ends.

wow, a very strange noise, and its coming from a cicada. Probably the species of an Ayuthia cicada.The cicadas in Thailand have a very distinctive calling song, way different from other species in the world.

i don't think so! Ben says that he has heard those bugs all his life but he has never seen one before. they sound like a Skill saw cutting a board.
